Preconference participants are cordially invited to attend a free reception directly after the conference to continue our conversations about music librarianship with members of SEMLA.
Stay for the SEMLA Annual Meeting: Reduced registration (only $10!) for the 2010 SEMLA Annual Meeting Oct. 14-16 is available to preconference participants. Participants who register for the annual meeting receive their first year membership in SEMLA free!
This special preconference workshop is part of the Educational Outreach Program (EOP) of the Music Library Association (MLA). The EOP provides workshops on the basics of music librarianship to all currently working in or considering a career in libraries. These workshops are taught by instructors who are practicing music librarians and active members of MLA. The EOP is sponsored by the Education Committee of MLA and the Music OCLC Users Group (MOUG).

Workshop Descriptions
Conference participants may select two 3-hour workshops from the following:
Sound Recordings Cataloging
Instructors: William "Mac" Nelson, University of North Carolina, Greensboro
Nara Newcomer, East Carolina University
Participants
in this workshop will enjoy a hands-on approach to learning the
essential skills of sound recordings cataloging. Together we will
identify and answer crucial questions such as What are the chief
sources of information for sound recordings? How do I decide on the
title proper? When am I required to input a new record? How do I deal
with all those dates and numbers? Sticking with the basics, we'll
develop successful solutions to practical cataloging problems. Bring a musical sound recording to catalog. During the workshop, as fields or types of information are discussed, you will work out a record for your item. You will be able to take this partial catalog record home with you.
Music Reference
Instructors: Sara Manus, Vanderbilt University
Nancy Zavac, University of Miami
Participants in this workshop will become familiar with tools and techniques to help locate recordings and printed music, as well as other sources of general information about music and musicians in various genres of music. We will identify some of the common problems encountered and discuss how to determine what the patron is actually trying to locate.
Videorecordings Cataloging
Instructors: William "Mac" Nelson, University of North Carolina, Greensboro
Nara Newcomer, East Carolina University
Join us for this workshop and learn the basic skills of videorecordings cataloging. Using a hands-on approach, we'll solve specific challenges posed by topics such as physical description, statements of responsibility, series issues, genre headings, and all those troublesome numbers--- 007, 028, 037, 030, and 024. Bring a music-related videorecording to catalog. During the workshop, as fields or types of information are discussed, you will work out a record for your item. You will be able to take this partial catalog record home with you. Enrollment limited to 25 participants.
Music Collection Development / Acquisitions
Instructors: Chris Durman, University of Tennessee, Knoxville
Holling Smith-Borne, Vanderbilt University
Participants in this workshop will learn the basic tools and skills for purchasing, selecting and deselecting music materials for their library based on the needs of their user community. The workshop will include a lively discussion of vendors, approval plans/standing orders, and development policies, as well as some interactive exercises.
