Workshop Descriptions

Conference participants may select two 3-hour workshops from the following:

Cataloging Sound Recordings

Participants in this workshop will enjoy a hands-on approach to learning the essential skills of sound recordings cataloging. Together we will identify and answer crucial questions such as What are the chief sources of information for sound recordings? How do I decide on the title proper? When am I required to input a new record? How do I deal with all those dates and numbers? Sticking with the basics, we'll develop successful solutions to practical cataloging problems. Bring a musical sound recording to catalog. During the workshop, as fields or types of information are discussed, you will work out a record for your item. You will be able to take this partial catalog record home with you.  Most catalogers will be dealing with a mix of AACR2 and RDA records in the future.  This workshop will provide a grounding in AACR2 and highlight key differences in RDA cataloging.

Music Reference

Participants in this workshop will become familiar with tools and techniques to help locate recordings and printed music, as well as other sources of general information about music and musicians in various genres of music. We will identify some of the common problems encountered and discuss how to determine what the patron is actually trying to locate.

Cataloging Videorecordings

Join us for this workshop and learn the basic skills of videorecordings cataloging. Using a hands-on approach, we'll solve specific challenges posed by topics such as physical description, statements of responsibility, series issues, genre headings, and all those troublesome numbers--- 007, 028, 037, 030, and 024. Bring a music-related videorecording to catalog.

Music Collection Development / Acquisitions

Participants in this workshop will learn the basic tools and skills for purchasing, selecting and deselecting music materials for their library based on the needs of their user community. The workshop will include a lively discussion of vendors, approval plans/standing orders, and development policies, as well as some interactive exercises.
